KNOWING AND USING THE DISCIPLINES FOR UNIT 4

Section: 3.3

For learning objective 3.3 you need to show you understand the discipline being used for unit 4.

Task:      You can complete this in any electronic format such as word, PowerPoint or InDesign.  Save and put on your blog and then print out and put in your folder.

                On the pages/slides:
1. Write down the 4 disciplines you are exploring in unit
2. Complete a brainstorm of everything you know of each one of these disciplines
3. Write down examples of things associated with the disciplines
4. Write down examples of other commissions using similar disciplines

1. Graphic Design             -design and layout of all pages in magazine
2. Advertising    -to put adverts in the magazine
3. Photo Imaging (photography)               -taking all of the photographs for the magazine and setting them up/manipulating them in photoshop
4. 2D art                               -experiment with drawing and sketching for magazine drafts and techniques for backgrounds/graphics

Meeting 2

1.      Finish any meeting material from meeting 1 if unfinished
2.      Get feedback forms from meeting 1
3.      Have your agenda ready for meeting 2
4.      Meet with 1-3 groups (15 mins each) to present new information
a.      Target audience research
b.      Research of magazines (if you want)
c.       List of ideas you want in the magazine (this should be main focus)
5.      Get feedback forms from meeting 2
6.      Complete meeting minutes and to do list for meeting 3


Meeting 3:  (Friday Nov 18)
a.      Target Audience Research (size and material)
b.      Detailed list of what goes in magazine (filled in on chart) (developed from meeting 2)
c.       Complete further research if necessary
d.      Rough drafts of cover, pages (depending on what you choose)
Remember your inspiration from the magazines when you are designing!

Meeting 1

Initial meeting with client:

Remember that this is a professional relationship and you are working for someone (who will pay you) to produce something they want!

Remember to pretend as if you know nothing about the brief at this point.


Meeting  1
1.       Type of an agenda of what you would like to discuss in your first meeting

2.       Meet with client

3.       Introduce yourselves formally

4.       Offer your expertise and skills (as a group and individually)

5.       Show examples of your work to demonstrate your skills and portfolio of work (Describe it if necessary)

6.       Get the project from the client

7.       Ask questions of what they want  (from brainstorm and PASCOE list)

8.       Remind the client of why you are good for the job and what skills and expertise you can offer

9.       Offer any ideas or advice (you can try to persuade them to believe things they should do/have in magazine!)

10.   Reassure the client you will go off and complete research about target audience and you would like to complete idea development to present in the next meeting

11.   Ask client if they have any last questions, instructions or comments

12.   Thank the client and tell them you look forward to the next meeting

You must decide on amount of pages in your school magazine, there are 3 options.


1.      4 A3 pages =  16 total A4 pages
(2 = front cover/back cover on thicker paper)
(2 pages= inside front cover, inside back over on thicker paper)
(2 pages = page 1 & 12: single page layouts)
(10 pages = 2/3, 4/5, 6/7, 8/9, 10/11 single of double page spreads on thinner/regular paper)

2.      5 A3 pages =   20 total A4 pages

(2 pages= inside front cover, inside back over on thicker paper)
